When the WECs (formerly known as Women's Sub-Committees) were first formed in 1967, their main role was to draw women out of their home, through activities and life-skills courses such as sewing and cooking which gave them basic employment skills. The social activities and programmes organized by the WECs also gave them the confidence to step out of their homes. Encouraging participation of women in social activities and in public affairs at community level also helped to raise the status of women. |
