7 Deadly Skin Sins

– As seen in The Singapore Women’s Weekly April 2010 issue

1. Zit popping
Doing so propels bacteria deep into your pores, causing infection and scars. “If you must, note that if it doesn’t “pop” the first time, don’t try again,” says Dr. Ang Por, consultant dermatologist, Dermatology Associates. Instead, dab on spot treatment cream with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.
2. Drinking too much
According to Dr. Ang, imbibing too much alcohol increases the production of skin-damaging free radicals in your body, speeding up ageing. Alcohol also increases the level of inflammatory agents in the bloodstream, which can make your skin sag faster over time, says Dr. Fredric Brandt, renowned US dermatologist.
3. Using dirty make-up brushes
It can lead to clogged pores and skin infections caused by bacteria. Wash your brushes monthly with a gentle shampoo solution or dedicated brush cleansers like Clinique Makeup Brush Cleanser, $35.
4. Rubbing your eyes
It irritates the delicate eye area, and can also cause breaks in capillaries that lie beneath, leaving your eye contours puffy, darkened and dull. If you must relieve an itch, use a cotton bud to gently stroke the area.
5. Skipping sunscreen
Use a broad-spectrum formula with a minimum SPF of 30 to block out UVA and UVB rays. And use enough, “The guideline is to squeeze out an amount about your index finger,” explains Dr. Daniel Yarosh, senior vice president of Basic Science Research for the Estee Lauder Companies.
6. Forgetting skincare at night
“Your body temperature increases slightly when you sleep, which can enhance absorption of whatever’s on the surface,” says Dr. Katie Rodan, dermatologist and co-creator of anti-acne skincare range, the Proactiv Solution. “So you want only beneficial ingredients on your face when you sleep.”
7. Avoiding the gym
Exercise reduces stress levels, prevents acne breakouts and energizes skin functions by boosting the circulation of blood and oxygen. As a result, your skin looks clearer and brighter. Working out also helps your body expel toxins through sweat. Remember to cleanse your skin after every workout and drink sufficient water to eliminate toxins – or you could be saying “Hello pimples!” very soon.
